Top Five Myths That Stand in the Way of Your International Adventure


I CAN'T AFFORD TO STUDY ABROAD

The Diversity of Programs we offer makes it easier find to a program that fits your budget. Consider location, season, & style of program when you are thinking about price. In most cases, any financial aid you currently receive can be applied to your study abroad experience. If you aren't currently receiving financial aid, you are eligible for loans for study abroad. Scholarships are available from the college (see list) & university. In addition, check your department for international scholarships. Students have successfully raised money for travel through local volunteer organizations like Rotary, Kiwanas, sororities & fraternities, and through churches.

You will never again travel as cheaply as you can now. Students are eligible for discounts all around the world. Check out the Travel Resources page for links to student discount travel services.

I HAVE TO SPEAK ANOTHER LANGUAGE

Most of our programs are offered in English. Studying abroad is an excellent way to learn/practice another language.

While you don't need to speak another language, you may want to enhance your experience by learning how to communicate with newfound friends in their own language or you may want to take advantage of being in another country to learn another language.

STUDYING ABROAD WILL KEEP ME FROM GRADUATING ON TIME

Planning early and working with your advisor will help ensure you will be able to make the most of your experience. Travel courses are a fun & unique way to meet the International Perspectives requirement and can be fulfilled over Winter Break, Spring Break, or during the summer.

STUDENTS CAN'T STUDY ABROAD UNTIL THEIR JUNIOR YEAR

Students can begin to study abroad as early as their freshman year. The earlier you start, the more time you have to incorporate that experience into your academic program. Meet with your advisor to discuss when study and work abroad would best fit into your plan.

I REALLY ONLY NEED TO STUDY ABROAD IF I PLAN ON WORKING INTERNATIONALLY

The global marketplace is just as much a reality in Lone Tree, Iowa as it is in New York, London or Tokyo. How can you develop the tools you will need to be a successful member of this global marketplace? Without an international experience, you won't.
