College of Agriculture and Life Sciences Scholarships - for CALS students only

They are processed through the Agriculture Study Abroad office, and application deadlines are: November 1 for spring programs, March 1 for summer programs, and May 1 for fall programs. If this is a weekend, deadline will be extended to the following Monday. The scholarship application form can be obtained by clicking here or picked from the Ag Study Abroad office at 111 Curtiss.

Other Funding Ideas

  • Contact your high school alumni association to see if they have scholarships.
  • Contact philanthropic organizations in your home town (Elks, Moose, Lions, Kiwanis, Rotary, etc.) to see if they have funding available.
  • Contact professional organizations related to your field of study.
  • Contact churches, clubs, etc., to see if they'd be interested in supporting your trip in exchange for which you'll do a presentation after you're returned.
  • Request funding from your academic department.

Dean of Agriculture Global Funding for Graduate Students & Postdocs

This scholarship provides support for international agricultural research and education opportunities for graduate students and postdoctoral fellows.


Awardees may utilize these funds to partially fund the cost of participating in research abroad teaching or enrolling in short courses, workshops or regular courses at institutions abroad, or other activities abroad that are directly related to professional development in the awardees field.

Graduate students who are enrolled full-time in graduate programs and postdoctoral fellows with appointments in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences are eligible to apply.

Graduate Student Travel Award for International Study in Sustainable Livelihoods

This award is made possible through an endowment generously established by Dr. Lorna Michael Butler and Dr. Robert O. Butler.

Purpose

This scholarship is intended to provide resources for students who are majoring, co-majoring, or minoring in the social sciences to pursue graduate-level research with an international theme of importance to the improvement of individual, family or community livelihoods in a developing country. Awards will typically range between $2,000 and $4,000 and are intended to support expenses associated with international travel, where the duration of travel for research exceeds one month.


Eligible Applicants
Eligible candidates include graduate students with a major or minor in the social sciences, pursuing multi-disciplinary research with an international theme. Preference will be given to students whose research is in Uganda in collaboration with the Center for Sustainable Rural Livelihoods (CSRL). Preference will also be given for women and minority student applicants (including international students). Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis.

Application
Applicants should submit a 1 – 2 page proposal to Shelley Taylor, Associate Director, Global Agriculture Programs, 111 Curtiss Hall, sztaylor@iastate.edu . The proposal should include the following information:

  1. Name and contact information of the applicant
  2. Name and contact information of ISU and international collaborator(s) the applicant will work with
  3. Description and location of the research the applicant will pursue
  4. Clear indication of the multi-disciplinary nature of the research, and impact on individual, family or community livelihoods
  5. Budget request (with estimates of all expenses)
  6. Level and nature of cost sharing or in-kind contributions by any parties
  7. Signature of major/supervising professor indicating their endorsement

 

Reporting
A final report will be required within one month of the completion of travel to be submitted to Global Agriculture Programs with a copy sent to the major/supervising professor. The report should not exceed 2 – 3 pages, and should include a description of research activities , with an indication of the budget spent. Any funds from the scholarship not spent, should be returned to the scholarship fund.

Behrens Scholarship for Study Abroad

This scholarship intends to offset the costs of international experiences for undergraduate students.

 

Eligible candidates must be enrolled in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, must be enrolled in or have been admitted to a study abroad program offered through the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences.

Jim and Connie Mohn Scholarship

This scholarship intends to support students as they prepare and complete a study abroad experience. It is divided into two parts, the first part is awarded to recipients before they travel and the second part is awarded to the same recipients after they successfully complete their study abroad programs.

Selection Criteria:

1. Recipients must be enrolled in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences.

2. Recipients shall have been selected for a study abroad program and shall have demonstrated commitment to the program to be eligible for the initial award.

3. Recipients shall have completed a study abroad program to be eligible for the secondary award.

4. Recipients shall have a minimum grade point average of 3.25 on a 4.0 scale.


Preference shall be given to students from Northwest Iowa as defined as being from one of the following counties: Cherokee, Clay, Dickinson, Emmet, Ida, Lyon, O'Brien, Osceola, Plymouth, Sac, Sioux or Woodbury. Eligible candidates must be in sophomore or junior class standing.

Dean of Agriculture Semester Exchange Scholarship

This scholarship was created to reward students who go for semester exchange programs. Awards are $1,000.


Undergraduate students who are in College of Agriculture, who are accepted on an Agriculture College and Life Sciences - sponsored exchange programs, and who agree to contribute support for students' study abroad programs when they finish school are eligible for this award.

Louis M. Thompson Study Abroad Scholarship

This award was created to reward academically outstanding students whose career objectives would benefit by an international experience, but whose financial situation might prevent their participation in a study abroad opportunity. Eligible candidates will be full time undergraduate students in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences who have a minimum GPA of 3.0 and who have demonstrated financial need by filling out and being accepted for FAFSA aid. This scholarship intends to offset the costs of international experiences for undergraduate students.

 

Eligible candidates must be in junior or above class standing, must be enrolled in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, must have earned a cumulative college GPA of 3.0, and must demonstrate leadership participation. Preference will be given to students who have successfully participated in the Agriculture and Life Sciences Dean's Leadership Scholars or Fred Foreman Scholarship for Growth in Leadership Participation programs.

CR Musser/ISU Agricultural Endowment International Travel Scholarship

This scholarship offsets costs of students participating in an international experience.


Undergraduate students who are in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, who are residents of Iowa, and who are receiving credit for their international experience are eligible for this award.

Eligible candidates will have demonstrated their interest in an agricultural career, will be judged on their academic performance and must demonstrate financial need by filling out and being accepted for FAFSA aid. Sojourner Scholarship (Now Available to Undergraduate Students Only)

This need-based award may be applied toward any study abroad program. Undergraduate applicants must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5. Credit earned while abroad must be applied toward an ISU degree. Past awards have averaged $250.
