Where is the money?


College of Agriculture and Life Sciences Scholarships

They are only for CALS students. Those with asterisks are processed through the Agriculture Study Abroad office, and application deadlines are: November 1 for spring programs, March 1 for summer programs, and May 1 for fall programs. The scholarship application form can be obtained by clicking here or picked from the Ag Study Abroad office at 111 Curtiss.

Other Funding Ideas

  • Contact your high school alumni association to see if they have scholarships.
  • Contact philanthropic organizations in your home town (Elks, Moose, Lions, Kiwanis, Rotary, etc.) to see if they have funding available.
  • Contact professional organizations related to your field of study.
  • Contact churches, clubs, etc., to see if they'd be interested in supporting your trip in exchange for which you'll do a presentation after you're returned.
  • Request funding from your academic department.
  • Ask the Development Office at your school for ideas and contacts.

Dean of Agriculture Global Funding for Graduate Students & Postdocs


This program provides support for international agricultural research and education opportunities for graduate students and postdoctoral fellows.


Awardees may utilize these funds to partially fund the cost of participating in research abroad teaching or enrolling in short courses, workshops or regular courses at institutions abroad, or other activities abroad that are directly related to professional development in the awardees field.

Graduate students who are enrolled full-time in graduate programs and postdoctoral fellows with appointments in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences are eligible to apply.

Robert Maxwell International Service Learning Scholarship


This scholarship encourages students to experience the satisfaction and personal growth that comes with service to fellow human beings.


This scholarship will help defray the travel and living costs of students volunteering in service learning opportunities in developing countries.

Undergraduate or graduate students who are in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences will be considered. Eligible candidates will have demonstrated their commitment to service and described how their commitment to service can be sustained in the career that they desire.

Deadline for application: November 1st for Spring programs, March 1st for Summer programs, May 1st for Fall programs.

Award amount varies each year. Complete the scholarship application.

US Department of Education/FIPSE International Travel Scholarships


There are scholarships available to graduate and undergraduate students interested in studying or conducting research for a semester or longer at specific partner institutions.


Students participating in these exchanges will pay ISU tuition and fees and pay all other costs to their host institution. Students can use the scholarships to offset travel costs, living expenses, or books and supplies.

Eligible students are full-time ISU students in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. Students can be of any major, but should have interest in one of the following areas:

Agroecology in Brazil

  • Federal Rural University of Pernambuco
  • Federal University of Para

Food and Society issues

  • Denmark: Dalum Agricultural College
  • France: Superior Institute of Agriculture, Beauvais
  • Ireland: University College Cork

Scholarships (ranging from $100 - $500) are also available for students on short term programs and internships that meet these criteria.

Deadline for application: November 1st for Spring programs, March 1st for Summer programs, May 1st for Fall programs.

Award amounts for semester programs will vary, but will range from $500 - $3,000.

Dean of Agriculture Semester Exchange Scholarship


This scholarship was created to reward students who go for semester exchange programs. Awards are $1,000.


Undergraduate students who are in College of Agriculture, who are accepted on an Agriculture College and Life Sciences - sponsored exchange programs, and who agree to contribute support for students' study abroad programs when they finish school are eligible for this award.

Louis M. Thompson Study Abroad Scholarship


This award was created to reward academically outstanding students whose career objectives would benefit by an international experience, but whose financial situation might prevent their participation in a study abroad opportunity. Eligible candidates will be full time undergraduate students in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences who have a minimum GPA of 3.0 and who have demonstrated financial need by filling out and being accepted for FAFSA aid. Preference will be given to students whose career objectives would be advanced by participation in a study abroad program.

CR Musser/ISU Agricultural Endowment International Travel Scholarship


This scholarship offsets costs of students participating in an international experience.


Undergraduate students who are in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, who are residents of Iowa, and who are receiving credit for their international experience are eligible for this award.

Eligible candidates will have demonstrated their interest in an agricultural career, will be judged on their academic performance and must demonstrate financial need by filling out and being accepted for FAFSA aid. Sojourner Scholarship (Now Available to Undergraduate Students Only):



This need-based award may be applied toward any study abroad program. Undergraduate applicants must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5. Credit earned while abroad must be applied toward an ISU degree. Past awards have averaged $250.

Freeman Asia Awards for Study in Asia


The goal of the Freeman-ASIA program is to encourage undergraduate students to study abroad in East and Southeast Asian nations by providing information and financial assistance. The award is valid on over one hundred programs in 15 Asian countries/regions. Undergraduates who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents, who have not yet entered their senior year of study, and who have verifiable financial need are eligible to apply. The Gilman International Scholarship

The Gilman International Scholarship is currently accepting applications from students participating in study abroad programs during Fall 2008 or the Academic year 2008-2009. There has never been a better time to apply as more Gilman Scholarships than ever will be awarded to students studying abroad this academic year. The Gilman Scholarship is open to all U.S. undergraduates, in good academic standing, who meet the criteria listed below:

  • Receiving a Federal Pell Grant at the time of application or provide proof that he/she will be receiving a Pell Grant during the term of study abroad. 

  • Currently applying to or has been accepted into a study abroad program eligible for credit by the student's institution of higher education in the U.S.

  • Studying abroad for at least four weeks in one country.

  • Studying abroad in a country not currently under a U.S. Department of State Travel Warning or in Cuba.

  • Studying on a program that begins between July 15, 2008 and October 15, 2008. The Fall cycle encompasses fall semester, quarter, and academic year programs that are a minimum of four weeks in length. Summer-only study abroad programs are not eligible.

Award recipients will receive up to $5,000.
