College of Agriculture and Life Sciences

Agriculture Study Abroad

Meet Josie Rudolphi

Josie is a junior in Ag Communications from Williamsburg, IA. She has studied abroad twice with the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, going to Panama in the summer of 2007 and to Australia during spring break of 2008. She would also like to continue with another travel course during her senior year.

Why did Josie choose to study abroad?
She was interested in travelling, but also wanted to travel with a purpose. She wanted to experience the agriculture and the culture of different countries from around the world. She also liked the idea of travelling with a group of students from Iowa State. This made her feel more comfortable as well as made it is easier to learn the customs of the countries she was visiting.

When finding a program to go on, she felt that the timing for both the Panama and Australia travel courses were good for her. She also felt that these sounded like interesting programs as well as interesting places to visit. By knowing the professors leading the trips she also knew it would be a fun and educational experience.

What was the best part about Josie's experience studying abroad?
The two best things about studying abroad for Josie were that she was able to meet many new people and experience different cultures. Through her travel courses, she was able to interact with many people in the country she was visiting and make many new friends. She also made many new friends with all of the Iowa State students she was travelling with. Experiencing the different cultures of both Panama and Australia were also very interesting for Josie. This opportunity allowed her to see how different their lives are from hers.

Josie's advice for other students who haven’t studied abroad?
“Definitely take advantage of this opportunity,” Josie said. “Find an interesting program in a location where you would like to go. You get to learn much more travelling as a group than you would alone. It changes the way you think about your world as well as the rest of the world.”
