Meet Luke Iseminger

An Iowans' footprints on the world

Luke is a senior in Ag Business from Hudson, IA. He started his first study abroad program summer 2007.

Why did Luke choose to study abroad?
Luke became interested in studying abroad after his great-uncle, who had visited China at the beginning of the Cultural Revolution, encouraged Luke to visit China if he ever had the chance. Two weeks later, Luke received an e-mail advertising a travel course to China. Luke admitted that if his uncle would not have said anything, he probably would not have been interested in going, but he is glad he did.

Where did he go?
Luke first studied abroad in China in summer 2007 on an Ag Business trip exploring business, economics, and rural development in China. He took his second study abroad trip to New Zealand over winter break 2007, on an Animal Science and Agronomy travel course. He plans to travel to Germany this summer on another study abroad trip to explore bioenergy, food and agriculture.

What is the best part of studying abroad?
“It is an experience no one can ever take away from you," said Luke. He felt like his experiences abroad have given him a global perspective. “It also helps you appreciate home,” he commented. But, by far he felt like the best thing he gained from studying abroad were some amazing experiences and some new friends.

Why should you study abroad?
Luke's perspective is that, “Students that do not study abroad are depriving themselves of an opportunity to learn and grow that will probably not present itself again.”
