Studying abroad was hands down one of the best decisions I’ve made. The knowledge and experiences I gained are unmatched. Not only did I get to live in Greece for three months, but I also got to travel to different countries in Europe. Now I am planning my next trip(s) abroad!

Garhett Allen, a junior in Agricultural Business from Decatur, Illinois, spent the Spring 2022 semester studying abroad in Thessaloniki, Greece, at Perrotis College/American Farm School.

“Growing up in the Midwest I never saw myself traveling abroad. It wasn’t until some upperclassmen within my Fraternity told me about their semester in Greece that I thought this would be a good opportunity for me. After researching more about the university and the opportunities the program had, I knew this was an experience I couldn’t pass up. In Greece, I grew exponentially in how to live independently, my willingness to try new things, and my overall confidence. Living in a foreign land really opens your eyes and gives you a different perspective on your own culture and the world. Not only was I taught many valuable life skills, but I also got to explore different locations within Greece, and different countries. I was able to travel to Switzerland, Italy, Germany, and the UK. Each one of these countries has a unique way of life, each equally fascinating. I hands down can say my semester abroad was one of the best experiences of my life. Looking to the future I am excited to expand my list of countries visited and become a more experienced traveler.

On campus, Garhett works as a Student Travel Consultant in the CALS Study Abroad Office and is an active member of the Agricultural Business Club and the Ag Marketing and Management Organization. Garhett is also involved in Greek life as a member of the FarmHouse fraternity.
