Kate Breja

Kate Breja, a senior in Global Resource Systems, is embarking on an exciting adventure as she spends the fall semester at the University College Dublin in Ireland. While in Ireland, Kate is enrolled in three courses: Emerging Crop Pathogens, Diversity in the Rural Landscape, and Agri-Environmental Policy/Issues. In addition, she is taking a course in Celtic Studies to fulfill her 12 credit requirements. Kate lives on-campus in the Glenomena apartments, where she shares an ensuite-style apartment with five other roommates.

To make the most of her time abroad, Kate joined the UCD women's rugby club. Through this, she has connected with peers from Dublin and beyond while learning and enjoying a new and exciting sport. Aside from rugby, Kate has also participated in various trips and events organized by the International Student Society, Residence Life Association, and Cultural Events Program. These activities have allowed her to meet fellow international students and forge friendships with people from Germany, Belgium, France, the U.S., the Netherlands, and more. Weekends are often spent embarking on adventures across Ireland and Europe with her newfound friends. Kate has immersed herself in the Irish culture, exploring various places throughout the country, including Galway, Howth Penninsula, Sligo, Cliffs of Moher, Newport, and more! Every place she visited offered beautiful views of the water, extensive hiking trails, cycling paths, and surfing beaches.

Living in Ireland has taught Kate some valuable lessons. First, she discovered it rains a lot, even when the weather forecast suggests otherwise. She has also noticed that dogs roam freely and are rarely on a leash. Adjusting to the traffic, she learned that cars don't always slow down for pedestrians. But perhaps the most impactful experience for Kate has been seeing the breathtaking landscapes of the Irish countryside.

Kate's advice to students would be to never be afraid to try something new or step outside of your comfort zone because you never know who you'll meet and the unforgettable memories you could make!
